5 Signs It’s Time to Get an Oil Change

It is best practice to follow your manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for getting oil changes, and we’ve discussed the importance of getting regular oil changes — but we understand life gets in the way. You get busy. But if you use your vehicle a lot, or it’s an older model, you may need to change your oil more frequently than recommended. Here are 5 signs it’s time to get an oil change that you shouldn’t ignore!

1. Your Oil or Engine Light Comes On

The warning lights on your vehicle are there for a good reason. When your (Red) check oil light comes on, this may be caused by either a low oil level in the engine or lack of oil pressure. Once triggered, it’s good practice to address this issue as soon as possible, before more serious issues arise.

2. You’re Hearing Noises

If you start to hear knocking noises as you drive or a ticking sound when you start the vehicle, this likely means your engine is struggling due to a lack of lubrication. Even if these noises go away upon driving your vehicle, this still requires attention immediately! These problems can likely be fixed with an oil change now, but it could lead to further issues — more costly issues — if it’s ignored.

3. Your Oil Is Thick, Dark, or Smelly

It is good practice to regularly check the oil level. Your oil should be translucent to a slight golden-brown in colour, and it should be at the full line indicated on the oil dipstick. If your oil is dark, smelly, clumpy, or lower than the line indicator, you may want to get your vehicle in for an oil change as soon as possible.

4. There’s Oil Leakage

The obvious sign your vehicle is leaking oil is by noticing fresh oil drops on the ground. But excess vehicle exhaust is another form of oil leakage. And even if the oil doesn’t look old or dirty, if you notice your oil levels dropping between regular changes, you need to get it looked at. Often oil leakage can be easily fixed by replacing the oil, switching to a different oil, or changing some faulty or damaged seals. Mention any oil leakage you’ve noticed to your mechanic or certified lube technician.

5. You’re Well Past the Recommended Time

No matter how little you drive, you should try to adhere to the schedule laid out by your vehicle manufacturer for oil changes and other maintenance. Even if your vehicle isn’t showing any other signs of needing an oil change, if you’re months past the time you should have gotten one, it’s time to get one!
