What Does It Mean If There’s Oil on My Spark Plugs?

Spark plugs are responsible for the spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture in the internal combustion chamber. Oil flows throughout various parts of your engine to keep it lubricated and running well. However, finding oil on your spark plugs isn’t a good sign. It may create some major issues with your engine that can affect its performance. Other than spotting oil where it shouldn’t be, you may also notice: your car’s engine becoming sluggish or misfiring; and there may be blue exhaust coming from the tailpipe which indicates a possible internal oil leak. There are a few different reasons why oil may be leaking into your spark plugs, and it’s essential to find out why so your mechanic can get it fixed, as soon as possible.

The Valve Cover Gasket Is Worn

A valve cover is the metal part that sits on top of the engine, and the gasket is the small part that fits between the top of the engine cylinder head and the valve cover to prevent oil from leaking out. It’s inevitable over time that the heat from the engine will wear down this gasket and create a leak.

This is a fairly easy and inexpensive problem to fix; however, it must be caught early so it doesn’t cause further engine damage due to lack of oil.

Bad O-Ring Seals

Under the tubes of the spark plugs sit O-ring seals that prevent oil from leaking out. These seals can also become worn over time and start to allow oil to seep through — damaging the spark plugs.

When this happens, you’ll need to replace the O-rings, as well as, the spark plugs if they’re already saturated with oil. Engine damage can also be a factor if this issue isn’t dealt with quickly.

Problems With the Piston

A piston ring, found on the top and bottom of an internal combustion engine, stops oil from entering the cylinder. Much like with the other parts in and around your engine, pistons can wear and crack over time — especially if they’re exposed to too much heat. If your piston rings are worn or cracked, you’ll likely notice your engine misfiring and hear rattling sounds coming from your engine. You should see your mechanic, as soon as possible.
