7 Benefits of Using Synthetic Oil
You may have heard the word “synthetic” and think it sounds like something you should avoid. But unlike with certain fabrics and other things, synthetic oil is the way to go when it comes to keeping your vehicle running smoothly. We’ll give you more details and tell you why.
What’s the Difference Between Synthetic & Conventional Oil?
Synthetic oil has a low viscosity — which means the oil can easily flow through your engine. And the faster the oil moves, the quicker the engine parts can turn, which keeps your vehicle running well.
On the other hand, conventional oil has a higher viscosity, which means your engine and its parts may have to work a bit harder. On top of that, it also contains some impurities that may clog up your engine over time.
Why Should I Spend More on Synthetic Oil?
Synthetic oil changes will almost always cost more than a conventional oil change. Still, the benefits you get will outweigh the costs. Here are 7 huge benefits you’ll gain by using synthetic oil for your oil changes:
It flows easier. Synthetic oil is low-viscosity and will flow better through your engine with less resistance. This is especially important during the sweltering heat and frigid cold winters, like what we get here in Yukon.
You can generally drive longer. Firstly, you should always follow the recommended oil change schedule set out by your manufacturer and/or qualified mechanic or certified lube technician. However, if you use synthetic oil, you may find yourself getting fewer oil changes because synthetic oil has a longer change interval.
Protection against engine issues. Synthetic oil will provide protection against ash and other deposits found in engine hot spots. It’s also resistant to thermal breakdown, oxidization, and typically won’t burn as much oil or allow sludge to build up in your engine.
Longer engine life. As we mentioned before, synthetic oil offers protection for your engine and its parts. This translates to your car functioning as it should and for longer than if you used conventional oil.
Fewer trips to the gas station. When your oil flows better during startup and driving, you likely won’t use as much fuel. This means you may gain some extra kilometres between trips to the gas station.
The environment will thank you. Your vehicle will be burning less dirty oil and fuel, so you’ll be putting less pollution into the atmosphere.
Your vehicle’s resale value will go up. If you have a well-running, properly maintained vehicle, your resale value may likely be higher.
Still Not Convinced?
Consumer Reports put out this report in 2019 explaining why most vehicles should be using synthetic oil and the benefits you’d receive if you do.
